Following this weekend’s latest installment of NASCAR’s Chase For The Championship I find it surprising that we have yet to see a clear contender emerge from the Top 10. It doesn’t look like anyone wants to take that extra step forward and make an open bid for the trophy. While rookie Denny Hamlin looked aggressive this weekend it wasn’t indicative of his driving style to date and winner Jimmy Johnson appeared just relieved to be done with the day at Martinsville.
You could argue that the current situation is indicative of a strong championship with the top 8 contenders being so close in points that, as Jeff Burton found out, one bad race means a four place shift in standings; but what does it say when the points leader is now someone who’s season can be summed up as “consistently mediocre”?
